Unfortunately, some children must cope with chronic pain from medical conditions such as juvenile arthritis,
traumatic injuries, gastrointestinal disorders,
cancer or its treatment, or other medical conditions.
Psychologists can assist with specialized
pain management techniques such as muscle relaxation, biofeedback and others to help reduce pain complaints. Combined with behavioral and cognitive-behavioral approaches, levels of distress can be reduced and functioning improved.
In consultation with the child's medical physician, pain medication may be able to be stabilized, reduced, or sometimes avoided or discontinued.
